I just installed a ceiling fan and lights won't work?

March 11th, 2010

I have this extra red wire coming from the ceiling outlet. This is a new home. The instruction manual for the ceiling fan did not talk about a red wire. this is what I did…
Ceiling Groundwire to Fan Green wire
Ceiling White wire to Fan White wire
Ceiling Black wire to Fan Black wire AND Blue wire. The fan works but the lights don’t.
What is this red wire for too? AM I supposed to attach the blue wire to the red one?
The light housing is connected to the fan housing already. That should not be the problem.

Should I get a ceiling fan or just a regular fan?

March 7th, 2010

Right now I have a ceiling fan in my apartment, but it just started humming when it’s on high, so I need to either replace it or fix it. I’m assuming it’s going to cost a lot to do that. I also rent my apartment, so I don’t want to put too much money into something I don’t even own. Should I just get a regular fan? Do they work just as well to keep me cool in the summer?

How do you tighten up the ceiling fan mount?

March 6th, 2010

I took out my old ceiling fan and put in a new one and found that the piece that holds the ceiling fan to the ceiling is loose. Is there a way to tighten it without going into the attick. There is not a lot of room to crawl up there. The mount is still up there it is just a little loose. Also how are the brackets held up. Is it just a couple of screws into the joists?

The base of my ceiling fan turns when the fan is on. Why?

March 5th, 2010

I have a ceiling fan on a 6" down rod. The down rod has a ball at one end that fits into a bracket attached to the ceiling. The wiring for the fan runs from the junction box in the attic through the downrod. Whenever the fan is on, the ball turns in the opposite direction. Eventually, the wires running through the fan get so twisted up that they pull themselves loose from the connections in the junction box. How can I stop this?

I’ve got a Hampton Bay remote controlled ceiling fan. The model number on the remote is UC7030T. I found the switches in the remote, but where are the switches on the fan? I need to change the frequency because it’s getting interference from somewhere and turning the light and fan on/off when I’m not in the room.

What would cause my ceiling fan to clatter? And would it be easy to fix?

March 2nd, 2010

My ceiling fan has a rattle that seems to be coming from the inside of the fan. The fan itself doesn’t wiggle or seem off kilter. The rattling is kind of intermittent, but is going on more often than not. I’ve read somewhere that it could be something to do with ball bearings.

I’m curious to know if anyone can give me advice on how to fix it. (Or if I should just replace it)

How do I get power to a new ceiling fan?

February 24th, 2010

I installed a ceiling fan in a bedroom where there was nothing. I ran a power line to the ceiling from the fan to a line that I saw that seemed to be hot and unswitched. I then found out that it was a switch for an outlet in the wall at the floor. So that outlet is powered by a line that is run along the floor. The hot goes up next to the doorway and switches at the entrance to the room. It then travels up over the door jam and down the other side to the outlet to complete the circuit. I figured that part out on my own. Now, How do I get a nuetral up to that fan to create a circuit without opening the walls? PS I’m a plumber and I took on this project for my mother in law. Please help before she calls an electrician and I look like a goof.

How do I wire the remote sensor to my ceiling fan?

February 18th, 2010

I bought a house that came with a ceiling fan thatwas supposedto remote controlled. However, the idiot that wired the house wasn’t sure how to wire the remote sensor and threw it away. I made him get a new one since you cannot control the speed of the fan w/o it. My question is really where am I supposed to wire it? The ceiling fan has a long stem. Do I mount the sensor at the top on the ceiling or can wire it where the stem meets the actual motor? I would assume that the wiring would be the same at both places, right, but I don’t want it to look out of place and I want the sensor to be able to read the remote control.
